What B1653 means

Seat position sensing lets the restraint system adjust how the driver airbag deploys based on how close the driver is to the wheel. The sensor mounts on the seat rail and reports back through the seat harness. B1653 stores when the module reads that circuit as out of specification, whether the signal is missing, out of range, or shorted.

Nothing about this code involves a firing loop, so the airbags themselves are not what set it. What the system loses is the ability to choose a deployment level, which is enough for it to flag a fault and turn on the light. The wiring sits under the seat and moves through the full seat travel every time the seat is adjusted.

Common causes

• A pinched or chafed seat harness where it passes under the seat rail
• The sensor connector unplugged or partly latched after seat removal
• A failed seat position sensor or a misaligned sensor bracket
• Corroded terminals from a spill or wet carpet under the driver seat
• Aftermarket seat hardware disturbing the sensor or its bracket

Crash data or hardware fault?

The module reads the sensor circuit live, so B1653 is a circuit fault that stops being active once the reading is normal again. Stored crash data is a different matter. It records an actual deployment, stays permanently, and is removed only by resetting the module.

Does our reset clear it?

Clearing B1653 does not repair the circuit that set it. The module checks the seat position input again on startup and stores the code back. Repair the harness, the connector, or the sensor first. Three makes use B1653 for this circuit: Lexus, Toyota, and Subaru. The seat position sensing design is close enough across them that the same inspection sequence applies, starting under the driver seat.

What to do next

Run the driver seat through its full travel with the harness in view and watch for binding or pull, because seat movement is what damages this circuit.
