Battery voltage has reached the passenger airbag first inflator loop, and that is what Acura reports as 12-8X. The SRS unit needs that pair isolated at its own low test voltage, so it disables the system as soon as power shows up on it.
Stage one of the front passenger airbag is the loop the module fires first in a deployment. It is held at a controlled voltage and monitored constantly. When the SRS unit sees battery voltage on that pair, it stores 12-8X, because a firing circuit connected to 12 volts is outside the module's control and cannot be trusted.
The source of that voltage is almost always another wire. Behind the dash the SRS bundle shares space with lighting, accessory, and HVAC circuits, several of which are hot with the key on or hot all the time. Worn insulation, a pinched bundle, or water in a connector will hand battery voltage to the firing pair without any damage to the airbag itself.
12-8X is a live electrical reading and nothing is stored permanently. Remove the voltage source and the circuit reads normal again at the next key cycle. Crash data works on a different rule, since the module writes it once during a deployment and keeps it regardless of any repair done afterward.
Nothing about a module reset takes voltage off this loop. Within seconds of key-on the SRS unit tests the circuit, finds battery voltage still present, and stores 12-8X again. Trace the voltage to its source and fix it. Once the electrical work is done, if the module is also locked on a deployment record, our mail-in reset clears that stored data.
The Acura index is where 12-8X lives in our lookup. Verify the code against the right list for the badge in front of you, because prefix numbering is not shared across every manufacturer.
Kill the battery and wait out the SRS capacitor before probing this circuit. With the key on and the airbag unplugged, check both legs of the stage one pair for voltage at the dash connector, then work backward along whichever leg is hot. The repair is at the point where the powered wire touches the firing pair, and the airbag itself is usually fine once that contact is separated. Related codes: 12-6X, 21-8X, B1C4E.
Trace the wiring and connectors first. If the module still holds the fault after the repair, mail it to us and we will clear it.
