What B1656 means

The buckle switch is a contact inside the belt buckle that closes when the tongue is inserted. These systems use that signal for the belt reminder and, on many vehicles, to influence how the driver restraints deploy. B1656 sets when the circuit reads out of specification, which covers an open, a short, or a switch that no longer changes state.

The buckle assembly and its wire live between the seat and the console, where they get flexed by seat adjustment and reached by anything spilled in the front of the car. Because the fault could be the switch or the wiring, splitting the circuit at the connector is the step that saves the most time on this one.

Common causes

• Debris or dried liquid inside the buckle preventing the switch from working
• A chafed buckle wire where it passes the seat frame or console bracket
• The buckle connector unplugged or partly latched after seat or console work
• A failed switch stuck open or closed
• Corroded terminals from moisture in the driver footwell

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1656 reflects a live circuit reading and clears when the circuit behaves. Crash data is stored instead of read, written when restraints deploy and held permanently in the module. A vehicle can carry both, and only the crash data requires the module to be reset.

Does our reset clear it?

Sending the module out for a reset does not repair a buckle switch or its wiring. The module reads the circuit again on the next key cycle and sets B1656 right back. Test the switch, repair or replace what is faulty, then use our mail-in reset if the module is locked with deployment data from a crash.

Which makes throw it

Lexus, Toyota, and Subaru all use B1656 for the left hand buckle switch circuit. The buckle design and wiring path are similar enough across the three that the same diagnostic order works.

What to do next

Unplug the buckle at its connector and check the switch by itself while latching and unlatching the belt, since that tells you in one step whether the assembly or the harness is at fault.
