B1642: Right Satellite Sensor Bus Lost

What B1642 means

Side satellite sensors on these vehicles share a communication bus back to the central module. That bus carries messages from the door and pillar sensors on one side of the car. When the module stops hearing traffic on the right hand bus, it stores B1642, because it cannot confirm any of the sensors on that side are still reporting.

A bus fault and a single sensor fault look different in the code list. Losing one sensor usually sets a code naming that sensor. Losing the bus points at the shared wiring, the power feed, or a single sensor that has failed in a way that pulls the whole line down. Testing has to separate those before parts get ordered.

Common causes

• A break or short in the right side satellite sensor bus wiring
• A connector at a door or pillar sensor left unlatched after trim work
• One failed sensor loading down the shared bus
• Corrosion at a sill or door jamb connector from water intrusion
• Harness damage from a previous right side repair

Crash data or hardware fault?

Communication faults are live readings, so B1642 clears as soon as the bus is healthy again. Crash data is not a reading at all. It is written when airbags fire, held permanently in the airbag sensor assembly, and cleared only when the assembly is reset.

Does our reset clear it?

Resetting the assembly does nothing for a dead bus. The module tries to reach the right side sensors again on the next startup and stores B1642 if the line is still silent. Repair the wiring or find the failed sensor first. For a Lexus with crash data locked in the assembly, our mail-in reset is the right service.

Lexus lists B1642 for the right side satellite sensor bus. The left side bus carries its own number, which means the code narrows the job to one side of the vehicle before any panels come off.

What to do next

Check the right side door and pillar sensor connectors one at a time, since a single unlatched plug can take the whole bus down. Disconnect sensors individually and watch whether communication returns, which identifies a unit that is loading the line.
