What B1615 means

Front airbag sensors mount ahead of the passenger compartment, near the radiator support or the frame rail, so they feel a frontal impact before the main ECU does. The left hand unit covers the driver side of the front end. B1615 is the ECU reporting that this sensor is not performing as it should, so it stops using that input.

Front mounted sensors take the worst of the weather. Road spray, salt, and heat all work on the housing and the connector, and any front end contact reaches them early. That combination puts corrosion and impact damage at the top of the list, ahead of the sensing element simply wearing out.

• A failed sensing element inside the left front airbag sensor
• Corrosion in the sensor connector from road salt and standing water
• Impact damage to the sensor or its bracket from a front end collision
• A mounting bolt left loose so the sensor moves instead of reading cleanly

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1615 describes a component in its current condition rather than a crash record. The ECU checks the sensor on every key cycle and rewrites the code until the part is right. Stored crash data is the other kind of entry: written when airbags fire, held permanently, and cleared only by a module reset rather than a scan tool.
