B1022 covers two unrelated faults depending on the badge on the car. On Nissan and Infiniti it means communication between the occupant classification control unit and the diagnosis sensor unit has been interrupted. On Mercedes-Benz it means the restraint systems control unit coding is faulty. Both leave the passenger side of the restraint system working incorrectly, and they are repaired in completely different places.
Nissan calls the airbag module the diagnosis sensor unit. The occupant classification system has its own control unit, mounted under the front passenger seat, working with a pressure mat in the seat cushion. That control unit decides how the seat is occupied and reports it up so the passenger airbag can be enabled or suppressed. B1022 is the report that the line between the two went quiet.
This code separates cleanly from its neighbors. B1017 is an occupant classification control unit failure, B1018 is a sensor failure in the seat cushion, and B1023 is the passenger airbag off indicator circuit. B1022 sits between them and points at the link.
The Mercedes-Benz meaning has nothing to do with any of that. In the Daimler fault list, B1022 reads: restraint systems control unit coding is faulty. B1023, B1073, and B1074 carry identical wording. It is a configuration problem inside component N2/7, and it normally follows a control unit that was replaced or a car assembled with equipment the coding does not match.
Neither version is stored crash data. Nissan and Infiniti log collisions under B1209 for a frontal event and B1210 for a side event, and Mercedes keeps its own crash record separately. B1022 is a live fault in both systems, so clearing codes does not address it.
The practical consequence lands on the passenger seat. With the occupant classification system out of contact, the module has no reliable read on who is sitting there, and passenger airbag status follows from that. Odd behavior from the passenger airbag off indicator is usually what sends the vehicle in.

On Nissan and Infiniti the repair is the wiring or a control unit, followed by a zero point reset performed with the factory tool. The reset is an initializing procedure required whenever the passenger seat is removed and installed or the occupant classification system is serviced, and without it the occupant detection system does not operate normally. On Mercedes the fix is coding, done with a dealer level tool at the vehicle. On a Nissan or Infiniti, start under the passenger seat with the seat run all the way forward and then all the way back. Look at the connector, the harness routing along the rails, and anything that has been dropped, kicked, or vacuumed against it. If the wiring is sound, the classification control unit and the diagnosis sensor unit come next.
On a Mercedes, confirm the control unit part number against the vehicle and have the coding checked before anything gets replaced.
