B0085 reports the left front side impact sensor on GM vehicles. It is a satellite sensor on the driver side whose job is to tell the sensing and diagnostic module how hard the vehicle was struck from the side, early enough for the module to fire the driver seat side bag and the left roof rail bag. When the module cannot trust what that sensor is saying, it stores this code.
Side impact sensors sit outside the deployment loops. They are small electronic units that report to the SDM, and the SDM makes the deployment decision for the restraints on that side. GM numbers them by position: B0085 left front side, B0086 right front side, B0087 left rear side, and B0088 right rear side. B0083 covers the left front impact sensor up front, a different part in a different place.
The two digit symptom byte behind the code is the piece worth writing down before anyone clears anything. GM documents B0085 39 as a left front side impact sensor internal malfunction and B0085 3A as an incorrect component installed. Those are two very different repair orders: the first sends you to a failed sensor, and the second says the sensor answering on that circuit is not the one the module expects to find there.
The 3A case catches a lot of collision repairs, because parts carrying different numbers can look the same in your hand.
Hardware. The module is reporting a component, and it is not replaying an accident. What makes this heavier than a loop code is GM's response. Deployments are disabled, so the vehicle is being driven with no side impact protection on the driver side until the sensor reads right.
There is still a crash angle worth checking. A driver side impact hard enough to hurt this sensor is usually hard enough to deploy something, so look for activity on B0014 and B0016 and for a latched deployment record in the module.
No. Our reset clears stored crash data, and this code is a live report about a part still wired to the module. Install the correct GM sensor for the VIN, repair the circuit, and the code stops setting.
If the driver side restraints deployed in the same accident, the module locked at that moment and stays locked no matter how good the new sensor is. An airbag module reset returns your original SDM cleared and ready to reinstall. Genuine OEM impact sensors and roof rail airbags are searchable by vehicle in the parts store.
The left front side impact sensor definition is GM service information, and it holds across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac vehicles built from roughly 2007 forward. Older GM restraint maps put different circuits on some of these numbers, so on an early 2000s vehicle look B0085 up against that model's own service data. Other manufacturers assign B0085 to their own systems.
Pull the symptom byte before anyone clears codes, because 39 and 3A split the job in half and the bare number does not. With a 39, inspect the sensor and its circuit and plan on a sensor. With a 3A, stop and check part numbers against the VIN, including on a sensor that was installed five minutes ago.
Then check where the sensor lives on that platform. On most GM vehicles the front side impact sensors mount low in the door or at the base of the pillar, which puts them within reach of water from a blocked drain and of anything that pulls on the door jamb harness. If B0086 or a rear side sensor code is stored with it, check the module connector and the shared feed before condemning two sensors on the same day.
