What 86-1X means

The OPDS sensor is a flexible mat laminated into the passenger seat back that reads the size and position of whoever is sitting there. Its reading feeds the occupant detection system, which in turn tells the SRS unit whether to enable the passenger airbag. When the sensor returns a value the system will not accept, 86-1X is stored.

A mat like this fails from physical stress more than from age. Passengers lean against it, cargo gets pushed into the seat back, and aftermarket covers pull it tight or crease it. Because the sensor is part of the seat back assembly, diagnosis usually ends with the seat trim coming off to reach the connection and the mat itself.

Common causes

• Creased, torn, or delaminated OPDS mat inside the passenger seat back
• Aftermarket seat covers pulled tight across the seat back and distorting the sensor
• Cargo or a child seat repeatedly pressed into the seat back
• A damaged or corroded connector where the mat plugs into the seat harness
• Moisture in the seat foam from a spill reaching the sensor

Crash data or hardware fault?

86-1X is about a component reading wrong rather than a firing loop out of range, which is why it lands in the hardware group. Stored crash data is the other thing a module can hold: a permanent record of a deployment that no scan tool clears. A sensor fault like this stays until the sensor situation is corrected.

Does our reset clear it?

Sending the module in does not repair a bad seat back sensor, and clearing codes around it just moves the light off the dash until the next self test. Address the mat or its connection first. Honda reports 86-1X. The 86 group covers the OPDS seat back sensor itself, which is what separates it from the 85 codes that describe the ODS unit and its signal.

What to do next

Take any aftermarket seat cover off first and recheck, because a cover cinched over the seat back is a cheap and common cause that gets overlooked. Then pull the seat back trim and inspect the mat and its connector for creases, tears, or corrosion.
