What 61-1X means

A buckle switch is a simple contact inside the belt receptacle that closes when the tongue clicks in. Its wiring runs down the buckle stalk, under the seat, and back to the SRS unit. The unit uses that input to decide how the driver's airbag and pretensioner should behave, and an open circuit leaves it without an answer.

The switch also drives the belt reminder light, so customers often notice the chime or the reminder acting up before they see the SRS lamp. Because the wire flexes every time somebody buckles up and the seat slides, the failure is usually in the stalk pigtail or the connector under the seat rather than in the switch contact itself.

Common causes

• Broken wire inside the buckle stalk pigtail from repeated flexing
• The connector under the driver's seat unplugged after seat or carpet work
• Corrosion in the under-seat connector from spills or a wet floor
• A failed switch contact inside the buckle assembly
• Harness pinched or cut by the seat track

Crash data or hardware fault?

Continuity is what the unit is reading here, and it reads it live. The SRS unit checks the buckle circuit every time the system runs, and the code sticks only while the circuit is open. Crash data is the other kind of entry, written once during a deployment and locked where a scan tool cannot touch it.

Does our reset clear it?

A reset does not close an open buckle circuit, and the code comes right back once the system checks itself. Repair the stalk wiring, the connector, or the buckle assembly first. What to do next

Wiggle test the pigtail where it enters the buckle stalk while watching resistance, since a wire broken inside that flex point is the most common failure and it will read fine when the belt sits still.
