What 53 means

Side impact sensors mount low in the body structure, usually near the pillar or the sill, close to where a striking vehicle makes contact. The right side unit gives the control unit the crash reading it needs to fire the passenger side airbag and curtain in time. Code 53 says that sensor is no longer working correctly.

This is a component failure rather than a wiring complaint, though the two can look similar from the driver seat. Sensors mounted in the sill area live with door slams, water that runs down inside the body, and the road salt that comes with it. Any of those can end a sensor without leaving a visible mark.

• A failed sensing element inside the right side airbag sensor
• Water running down the pillar or collecting in the sill and reaching the sensor
