What 41-2X means

Front impact sensors are small accelerometers bolted up front, ahead of the engine, where they feel a collision before the sensor inside the control module does. Each one runs its own self test and reports the result. When the left front sensor reports that it has failed internally, Honda and Acura store 41-2X and take the deployment decision offline.

This code is different from a wiring complaint. The module is receiving information from the sensor, so the circuit is doing its job. What has gone wrong is inside the sensor housing, which is why the fix here is usually the sensor and not the harness. Where the sensor sits explains most of the failures, since it lives in the path of road spray, salt, and anything that hits the front of the car.

Common causes

• Water and salt intrusion into the sensor housing after years of road spray
• Impact damage to the sensor or its bracket from a minor front-end hit
• A sensor that was reused after a previous collision repair instead of replaced
• Internal electronics failure from heat and vibration where the sensor mounts
• A sensor that was dropped or overtightened during a bumper or radiator support repair

Crash data or hardware fault?

41-2X is a hardware fault the sensor is reporting about itself, not stored crash data. The module writes crash data only after a deployment, and once written it stays there permanently. This code, by contrast, reflects the sensor's current self test result, so it stops appearing once a good sensor is installed.

Does our reset clear it?

A module reset does not repair a failed sensor, and clearing 41-2X while the sensor is still bad puts the code right back. Replace the sensor first. A mail-in reset belongs in a different situation, which is a control module locked on deployment data after a crash, and front impact sensors are commonly replaced as part of that same repair.

Both Honda and Acura carry 41-2X for the left front impact sensor. The sensor location and the meaning are consistent across the two brands, so the diagnosis runs the same way on either one.

What to do next

Look at the sensor and its connector physically before you order anything, since corrosion at the connector and a cracked bracket are both visible in a couple of minutes. Check that the mounting surface is straight and that the bolt is tight, because a sensor that is not solidly attached will not read the way the module expects.
