34-1X: Right Curtain Airbag Open

What 34-1X means

A small test current goes out through the right curtain inflator loop and the SRS unit reads what comes back. If the resistance is above the window the module allows, or if nothing returns at all, Honda and Acura store 34-1X. The curtain is taken out of service while the code is present, which on a rollover-capable system is a significant loss of protection.

The right curtain circuit reaches from the SRS unit up the passenger side of the car and along the roof rail to the inflator at the front of the curtain. Because the run is long and passes through several connectors, high resistance builds at the joints more often than it appears in the wire itself.

Common causes

• A curtain connector at the A-pillar or roof rail left unlatched after glass or headliner work
• Corroded terminals at the pillar connector after a sunroof drain or windshield leak
• A conductor broken inside the loom where the headliner was flexed during a repair
• An inflator that has failed open inside the right curtain assembly
• Pins backed out of the SRS unit connector after repeated removal

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is a live resistance reading rather than a stored deployment record. Reconnect the loop properly and the module reads in range at its next self test with no further action. Crash data is written once, at the moment of deployment, and remains in the module regardless of what is repaired afterward.

Clearing 34-1X with a scan tool leaves the open where it is, and the module stores the code again within seconds. Repair the connector or replace the curtain first. What to do next

Take the right A-pillar trim off and inspect the curtain connector, since a connector that was never latched after windshield work is the single most common source of this code. Measure the inflator loop at the curtain side to separate the assembly from the harness.
