What 22-1X means

The passenger belt tensioner carries a pyrotechnic igniter, and the SRS unit watches its loop the same way it watches an airbag. A low test current goes out and the module compares the resistance that returns against a fixed window. Anything above that window, including a complete break, produces 22-1X on both Honda and Acura.

The circuit leaves the SRS unit, runs under the passenger carpet, and terminates at the retractor behind the B-pillar trim. High resistance in that run rarely comes from the wire itself. It comes from the connections, where corrosion and partly seated terminals add resistance a multimeter will show but a visual check will not.

Common causes

• A corroded connector at the base of the B-pillar after water got under the carpet
• A tensioner connector left unlatched after trim, seat, or belt work
• Terminals in the retractor connector spread from being unplugged repeatedly
• A broken conductor inside the floor harness where it has been walked on or crushed
• An igniter that has gone open inside the passenger retractor assembly

Crash data or hardware fault?

Because 22-1X tracks resistance in real time, it is a live fault and not stored crash information. Restore the connection and the module reads normal on the next self test. Crash data gets written once, at deployment, and no amount of repair or key cycling removes it from the module.

Does our reset clear it?

Running a reset on a module that reports 22-1X changes nothing about the open circuit. The SRS unit measures the loop again seconds later and stores the same code. Repair the connector or replace the retractor first. Where our mail-in reset does apply is a module locked after a real deployment, which is a different fault stored in a different place.

Which makes throw it

Honda and Acura both use 22-1X with the same definition for the passenger tensioner. The test procedure is the same on either brand, and so is the list of places the resistance usually comes from.

What to do next

Pull the B-pillar trim and unplug the passenger tensioner, then look at both connector halves under good light for green corrosion or a terminal that has backed out. Measure the igniter loop at the retractor to separate the belt assembly from the harness.
