What 21-9X means

Seat belt tensioners fire on a monitored circuit, the same way an airbag inflator does. The SRS unit checks both legs of the pair against the body of the car. When one of them reads grounded, the module can no longer be sure it decides when that tensioner fires, so it stores 21-9X and disables the system.

Ground faults on this circuit are usually mechanical. The wiring runs along the floor and up the B-pillar, surrounded by sheet metal, seat brackets, and trim clips. A wire that loses its insulation against any of that is grounded immediately. Water that collects under the carpet does the same thing through a corroded connector, with the wire still looking perfect.

Common causes

• Insulation worn through where the floor harness passes a seat bracket or a body seam
• A trim clip driven through the harness when the sill plate was reinstalled
• Water under the carpet corroding the B-pillar connector and grounding a terminal
• A pinched wire at the retractor where the harness enters the pillar
• Internal damage in the tensioner igniter putting the loop to the retractor housing

Crash data or hardware fault?

What 21-9X records is the module's present reading on the tensioner loop, so it is a live fault. Break the ground path and the code stops being current. A deployment record is different in every way. It gets written the moment the tensioner or bag fires and stays locked in memory until the module is reset on the bench.

Does our reset clear it?

Erasing the code leaves the wire sitting on ground where it was. The module rechecks the loop at key-on and 21-9X comes right back. Repair first, clear second. If the belts actually fired and the module is locked on crash data, that stored record is what our mail-in reset removes, and it still requires the tensioner and belt hardware to be replaced.

Which makes throw it

Our Acura code list carries 21-9X. Check the number against the index that matches the vehicle, since a similar-looking code on another manufacturer's chart can point somewhere else entirely.

What to do next

Take the sill plate off and follow the harness from the retractor forward, watching for clip damage and shiny spots where the loom has been rubbing. Measure each leg of the tensioner pair to a clean chassis ground with the tensioner unplugged.
