What 21 means

The airbag control unit checks its own internal hardware every time it powers up. Firing drivers, memory, internal voltage regulation, and the crash sensing electronics all have to pass before the module will arm the system. Code 21 is what it stores when one of those internal checks fails, and deployment stays disabled while the code is present.

A control unit that condemns itself is not usually repairable on the car. That said, the module lives in the center of the vehicle where water can reach it, and it depends on clean power and solid grounds, so both are worth confirming before deciding the box is finished.

Common causes

• An internal electronic failure inside the airbag control unit
• Water reaching the module from a leaking windshield, sunroof drain, or wet carpet
• Voltage damage from jump starting, a reversed battery, or a failing alternator
• Impact damage to the module or its mounting bracket
• A used control unit installed that was already faulty or had been improperly serviced

Crash data or hardware fault?

Code 21 is a hardware fault the module reports about itself, and it stays present through any scan tool clear. Crash data is the other kind of entry a Subaru control unit holds. It is written when airbags deploy, it is locked in permanently, and a module reset is what takes it out.

Which makes throw it

Code 21 is the Subaru airbag ECU failure code. It is one of the few Subaru SRS codes that points at the module instead of a circuit or a sensor, which changes the repair path considerably.

What to do next

Measure battery voltage and check the module grounds before assuming the control unit is finished, since poor power makes healthy modules report faults. Pull the carpet near the module mounting point and look for moisture, especially on cars with a history of leaks.
