On Acura, 21-8X points at the driver seat belt tensioner circuit picking up battery voltage. The tensioner is a pyrotechnic device on the same kind of monitored loop as an airbag, and the module shuts the system down when power appears on it.
The driver belt tensioner fires in a crash to pull slack out of the belt before the airbag arrives. Its igniter sits on a loop the SRS unit holds at a low test voltage and watches continuously. Battery voltage on that loop means an outside circuit has connected to it, and Acura stores 21-8X for exactly that reading.
This circuit lives in a rougher neighborhood than the dash bags. It runs under the carpet along the sill, up behind the B-pillar trim, and into the retractor. Feet, seat tracks, floor mats, water, and anything hauled across the back seat all put wear on that run, and the powered circuits for seats and door modules often share the same path.
21-8X reports a live condition on the tensioner loop, so it stands only while the voltage is present. Once the source is removed the reading returns to normal and the module stops setting it. Stored crash data is written once at deployment and does not respond to repairs at all, which is why it needs a different service.
A reset will not pull battery voltage off the tensioner loop. The SRS unit retests the circuit at every key-on and stores 21-8X again as long as the short exists. Repair the wiring first. Our mail-in module reset is the answer for a module locked after a deployment, including one where the tensioners fired, but only after the physical repairs are finished.
This code is listed under Acura in our index. If you are looking at a Honda with a similar symptom, pull the Honda list instead so you are testing the circuit that code actually names.
Pull the B-pillar trim and the sill plate and look at the connector at the base of the pillar, since that is where water and foot traffic do their damage. With the battery disconnected and the capacitor drained, unplug the tensioner and check the harness side for voltage after reconnecting power. A hot leg there sends you back along the sill, and a clean reading points at the retractor assembly itself. Related codes: 12-8X, 21-9X, B1023.
Trace the wiring and connectors first. If the module still holds the fault after the repair, mail it to us and we will clear it.
