21-1X is the Honda code for an open in the driver's seat belt tensioner circuit. The pretensioner is a deploying restraint like any airbag, so when its loop reads open the SRS unit stores the fault and lights the dash.
The driver's pretensioner fires through a squib loop wired back to the SRS unit, the same way an inflator does. Honda's unit checks that loop for continuity every time the system runs its self test. An open reading tells it the path is broken somewhere between the unit and the tensioner, which means the belt would not pull tight in a crash.
Belt circuits fail at the connector more often than anywhere else. The harness has to survive a seat sliding forward and back thousands of times, feet under the rails, and whatever gets spilled on the carpet. The code reports only that the loop is broken, so the tensioner, the plug under the seat, and the wiring between them all stay on the list until one is ruled out.
Treat 21-1X as a live measurement, not a record of something that happened. The unit is telling you what the tensioner circuit reads right now. Crash data is the other category: written permanently after a deployment, unerasable with a scan tool, and unaffected by wiring repairs. This code disappears once continuity comes back.
Resetting the module does not close an open tensioner loop, and the code returns as soon as the system checks itself again. Repair the wiring or replace the tensioner first. Where our mail-in service does apply is the other half of the problem: if the car was in a crash and the module is locked on deployment data, that data is what we clear once the physical repairs are finished.
Honda is the make that uses 21-1X in our lookup. The 21 group covers the driver's belt tensioner, and the second pair of characters tells you which failure mode the unit recorded inside that group.
Slide the seat all the way forward and inspect the connector underneath it before touching anything else, because that plug is the single most common cause and it is a two minute check. Then unplug it and measure across the tensioner side to see whether the device itself reads open.
