What B1B8F means

Open and low are two different complaints on the same sensor. Low means a signal is present but sitting under range. Open means there is no circuit at all, so the controller is looking at a disconnected wire, a broken conductor, or a sensor that has lost its internal connection. The seat position input is missing entirely.

Without knowing where the driver seat sits, the controller cannot select a deployment level for the driver airbag, so it flags the fault and lights the lamp. The most common reason for a completely open circuit is mechanical: a connector under the seat that came apart. Seats get removed for carpet work, wiring work, and upholstery repair more often than people expect.

• Seat harness connector unplugged or not relatched after the seat was out
• A broken wire where the harness flexes as the seat slides
• A sensor that has failed open internally
• A terminal backed out of the connector body

B1B8F is a live circuit reading and clears itself once continuity is restored. Deployment records are the codes that stay put. Those get written the moment airbags fire, sit in the controller permanently, and are removed only by a reset, which is a different service from chasing an open wire.

Does our reset clear it?

Nothing about a reset closes a broken circuit. If you clear B1B8F while the sensor is still disconnected, the controller stores it again during its next self test. Find the open first. When a Jeep has crash data locked in the controller after a deployment, that is when mailing the unit to us is the correct step.
