The occupant detection system mat is a pressure sensitive layer built into the passenger seat cushion. It reports an occupancy pattern to the module, which uses it to arm or suppress the passenger airbag and to drive the belt reminder. An invalid signal means the mat is answering, but with a value the module cannot make sense of as a real seating pattern.

An invalid signal points at the mat and its electronics instead of a simple break in a wire. Mats degrade with use. The sensing elements are thin and they sit directly under the occupant, so years of getting sat on, plus heat from a seat heater underneath, eventually change what the mat reports. Aftermarket seat covers and heavy objects left on the seat can also skew the pattern.
