The left upfront crash sensor is what 0X9309FB covers on BMW, reported either shorted to positive or open. Upfront sensors sit ahead of the main module and give it the earliest read on a frontal impact.
An upfront sensor is an accelerometer mounted near the radiator support or the front frame rail, far enough forward to feel a frontal crash before the ACSM does. The extra milliseconds it buys let the module decide on deployment sooner. Its circuit carries both power and signal, and the module logs 0X9309FB when it reads supply voltage where it should not or gets no connection at all.
Because the sensor lives at the very front of the car, it takes the weather and the road. Salt spray, standing water, and stone impacts all land on that connector. It also sits in the first zone of damage in any front end contact, so a bumper tap that looked cosmetic can leave the sensor harness stretched or its connector cracked open.
0X9309FB is a live circuit report, so it reflects the state of the wiring right now and it clears when the wiring is right. Stored crash data is a different record altogether. It is written once, at deployment, to mark that the system fired, and it stays in the module no matter how many times the codes are cleared with a scan tool.
Do the electrical repair before anything else, since a reset does not restore a broken connection or remove voltage from a signal wire. Once the sensor circuit reads correctly, clear normally. A BMW that was hit hard enough to deploy will have crash data stored in the ACSM alongside any sensor faults, and mailing us the module is how that locked record gets cleared.
BMW vehicles use 0X9309FB, read through BMW hex diagnostic software. The upfront sensor concept is common across the industry, but this particular code number is BMW only.
Inspect the sensor connector at the front of the car with a light, looking for green corrosion, a cracked housing, or a plug hanging loose after service. Wiggle test the harness while watching the fault status to catch an intermittent open. If the sensor tests bad, replace it with a genuine OEM unit, and call 501-988-0611 if you need one sourced. Related codes: 0X9309E8, 0X930A07, 31-3X.
Trace the wiring and connectors first. If the module still holds the fault after the repair, mail it to us and we will clear it.
