What 01227 means

A passenger side deployment writes a permanent entry into the controller, and 01227 is how that entry reads. The lock is deliberate. A controller that has recorded a crash is not supposed to quietly go back to work, so it holds the record, keeps the warning light on, and refuses to arm any airbag connected to it.

Because the entry is a record and not a measurement, no repair on the vehicle affects it. You can install a new passenger side airbag, a new curtain, and a new sensor, and the controller will still report 01227 the next time it is scanned. Removing the record takes a reset performed on the controller itself.

Common causes

• The passenger side airbag deployed in a side impact
• A rollover or severe side event that fired the passenger side
• A donor controller installed from a vehicle that had already recorded a passenger side deployment
• Components replaced after a prior crash without the controller ever being reset
• An impact that deployed the passenger side while the front bags stayed closed

Crash data or hardware fault?

Stored crash data and circuit codes are two different things. A circuit code is a reading the controller retakes constantly and drops when the wiring is correct. A crash record is written at the instant of deployment, locked, and kept for good, which is why a scan tool reads it but cannot erase it.
