What 01226 means

When the driver side airbag fires, the controller writes a permanent entry noting that it happened. 01226 is that entry. It exists so a controller that has already been through a crash cannot be put back into service without someone dealing with it deliberately. While it is stored, the system stays disabled and the warning light stays on.

Nothing you replace on the car changes this entry. A new driver side airbag, a new curtain, new sensors, and clean wiring still leave 01226 in the controller's memory. That is the design working as intended, and it is also why a collision repair that looks finished can still have a light on the dash.

Common causes

• The driver side airbag deployed in a side impact
• A rollover or severe side event that triggered the driver side deployment
• A used controller installed from a donor car that had already recorded a driver side deployment
• A previous repair where components were replaced but the controller was never reset
• An impact that fired the driver side while leaving the front bags intact

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is stored crash data, which is fundamentally different from a circuit code. Circuit codes describe a measurement the controller takes every key cycle and they clear themselves when the wiring is right. A crash record is written once, locked, and preserved, and only a proper reset of the controller removes it.
