What 00595 means

When the controller decides a crash has occurred, it writes a permanent record into its own memory. That record is what 00595 reports. The module locks in this state on purpose, so a unit that has already been through a deployment cannot be quietly reused without anyone knowing. The warning light stays on and the system stays disabled.

Because this is a stored record and not a measurement, nothing on the car changes it. New airbags, new tensioners, new sensors, and perfect wiring still leave 00595 in memory. Scan tools will read it and will not erase it, which is where a lot of otherwise finished collision repairs come to a stop.

Common causes

• Front airbags deployed in a collision
• Seat belt tensioners fired without the airbags going off, which happens in moderate impacts
• Side airbags or curtains deployed in a side impact
• A used controller installed from a donor vehicle that had already recorded a crash
• An impact severe enough to trigger the recording without deploying anything

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is stored crash data, and it behaves the opposite way from a circuit code. A circuit code reflects what the controller measures right now and clears on its own once the wiring is right. A crash record is written once, locked, and kept permanently, which is exactly what the design intends.

Audi and Volkswagen both store 00595 for recorded crash data, and the behavior is identical on either brand. Both lock the controller and both require the record to be cleared off the vehicle.
