What 01220 means

N202 fires the rear side airbag on the passenger side. Like every other pyrotechnic device in the system, it sits on a loop the controller tests continuously. When the resistance lands outside the acceptable window, whether high or low, Audi and Volkswagen store 01220 and disable deployment.

Rear side airbag wiring shares the same weak points on both sides of the car. The harness crosses the floor, reaches a connector at or under the rear seat, and enters the seat back. Rear footwells collect water from door seals and clogged drains, and rear seats come out for all kinds of unrelated work, which is when connectors get left loose.

Common causes

• A connector left unlatched after the rear seat was removed or folded
• Corroded terminals at the rear floor connector after water collected there
• A harness damaged by cargo or by aftermarket audio wiring run to the rear
• A wire pinched between the seat frame and the body during reassembly
• Igniter failure inside the passenger side rear airbag assembly

Crash data or hardware fault?

01220 is a live circuit reading and not a crash record. The controller retests the loop at every key-on, so the code stops being current when the resistance is right. Stored crash data works on the opposite principle, written once at deployment and kept in the controller permanently.
