What 01219 means

Cars equipped with rear side airbags carry an igniter in each rear seat back, and the driver side unit is N201. Its loop is monitored the same way as the front bags, with a resistance check at every self test. A reading outside the window stores 01219 and takes the system out of service.

The run to a rear side airbag is long. It leaves the controller, crosses the floor under the carpet, and reaches a connector near or under the rear seat before entering the seat back. Rear seats get folded, removed, and loaded with cargo, and the connectors down there are in the path of anything that leaks into the rear footwell.

Common causes

• A rear seat connector unlatched or damaged after folding, removing, or reinstalling the seat
• Corrosion in the floor connector after water collected in the rear footwell
• Harness damage from cargo, a subwoofer install, or aftermarket wiring run to the rear
• A conductor pinched by the seat frame when the seat back was refitted
• An igniter that has failed inside the rear side airbag assembly

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is a live circuit measurement rather than a stored deployment record. Once the loop reads correctly the controller stops setting the code on its own. Crash data is written permanently when a bag fires, and it stays in the controller until the unit is reset away from the vehicle.

Does our reset clear it?

Resetting the controller does not repair the loop, and 01219 comes back on the next self test while the fault is present. Fix the connector, the harness, or the airbag first. Our mail-in reset exists for a controller holding a deployment record, which is a separate entry that a scan tool cannot remove.

Which makes throw it

N201 is the driver side rear designation on Audi and on Volkswagen. The component designation is shared, so the wiring approach is the same on either badge.

What to do next

Fold or lift the rear seat and get to the connector before anything else, because rear seat service is the most common reason this circuit goes out of range. Look for a latch that was never closed and for a wire pinched by the seat frame. With the airbag unplugged, measure the loop at the seat side to decide whether the fault is in the bag or the harness, and replace the airbag with a genuine OEM assembly if it reads wrong.
