What single-stage means

The simplest belt design, still serious safety hardware

Single-stage is the original pretensioner layout and it is still the most common belt on the road. There is one pyrotechnic charge in the retractor and one electrical connector running to it. When the airbag control module reads a crash, it fires that one charge and the belt snaps tight against you before you can pitch forward.

Because it is one charge, a single-stage belt is straightforward to identify and to rebuild, but it is no less important. That single pretensioner is what keeps you in the seat in the critical moment before the airbag inflates. Once it fires it is finished. A pretensioner fires once in a deployment and cannot reset itself, so the belt that saved you in one collision will not work in the next one until the charge is rebuilt.

Where you will find single-stage belts

Single-stage pretensioners show up most often on:

Late 1990s and 2000s domestic cars and trucks
Economy and base-trim vehicles where the manufacturer used a simpler restraint
Many imports of the same era before multi-stage systems became standard
Rear and middle seating positions on vehicles that run multi-stage belts up front

The surest way to tell is the connector. One plug on the pretensioner means single-stage. If your belt has two or three plugs, you have a dual-stage or triple-stage belt instead, and those are rebuilt a little differently. Not sure which you have?
