Why your A4 airbag light will not go off

Audi shares Volkswagen's airbag computer, called the airbag control module or J234. On your A4 it runs the supplemental restraint system. It reads the impact sensors, fires the airbags and seat belt pretensioners in a crash, and writes a permanent deployment record, often with a supply-voltage code that keeps the warning light on. Once that data is stored, the module locks and the airbag light will not clear on its own.

A scanner cannot erase that data, because it lives at the module level. Audi modules are also coded to the car, and on the newer cars a replacement can trip component protection codes like U1101 that need a factory tool and an online session to clear, so dealers tend to push a new coded unit.
