The short, honest answer
When the SRS airbag light is on, your airbag system has flagged a problem and may not deploy in a crash. The car will start, steer, and brake normally, so it can be driven mechanically. But you would be driving without the airbag and seat belt protection you are counting on. In a serious collision, that protection may not be there.
So the responsible answer is no, not as a normal state. Treat it as urgent. Drive only what you must to get it diagnosed and fixed, drive carefully, and get the system restored quickly. The SRS is a life-safety system that has to be ready before you rely on it.
What the light actually means for your safety
Your airbags, seat belt pretensioners, and crash sensors are all managed by one small computer, the airbag control module. When that module finds a fault, it lights the dash warning and, depending on the fault, may disable part or all of the system so it does not misfire. The light is the system telling you it is not ready to protect you.

Why the light is on changes the urgency
Not every airbag light has the same cause, and the cause shapes how you should handle it:
- After a crash. If your airbags deployed, the module is locked with crash data and the system is offline. It will not protect you again until that data is cleared and any deployed parts are rebuilt. This is the most serious case.
- A stored fault code. A sensor, connector, clockspring, or belt fault can light it up without a deployment. The system may be partly or fully disabled depending on the fault.
- An intermittent flicker. Even a light that comes and goes points to a real fault that needs diagnosis. An intermittent connection is still a connection that can fail in a crash.
The fastest way to know your case is to pull the trouble code and look it up. You can check any SRS code on our airbag code lookup to see whether it points to a deployment, a wiring issue, or a part.
What to do, in order
- Treat the car as compromised for safety. Limit driving to what is necessary and drive cautiously.
- Pull the SRS trouble code, or have a shop pull it, and look it up.
- If there was a crash, make sure the vehicle has been properly repaired and is mechanically safe before anything else.
- Get the system restored: a module reset for stored crash data, a part replacement for true hardware faults, or a belt rebuild for fired pretensioners.
How to get the light off the right way
If the light is on because the module is holding crash data after a collision, the fix is to clear that data and rearm the system. One caution carries through all of this. Clear the code only after the cause is fixed. Erasing a code on a car that still has unrepaired damage hides the warning while leaving you on a system that cannot protect you, so the repair always comes first and the reset arms the system once the car is sound.
The bottom line
Mechanically your car may move just fine with the airbag light on. From a safety standpoint, you are driving without a working safety net. Get it diagnosed and restored promptly, make sure the vehicle is properly repaired and mechanically safe first, and then bring the SRS back online so it is ready the next time you actually need it.
