First, what a reset really is
When your airbags deploy, the airbag control module stores crash data and locks itself with hard fault codes. That is what keeps the SRS light on. We explain the full mechanism in our guide on why the airbag light stays on after an accident. A reset clears that stored data at the module level and returns the module to the factory-ready state it was in before the crash.
A reset works on the data side only. It erases the stored crash codes; the physical condition of the car and the module is a separate matter. If the module took electrical damage in the crash, or your trouble code points to a true hardware fault, the module needs replacement. Most after-accident modules are not damaged. They are simply holding the memory of the deployment, which is exactly what a reset is for.
Your three options, honestly compared
There are really three ways to get a module cleared. Here is how they stack up:
- The dealer. They will almost always sell you a brand new module, often with programming, at full retail. It works, but it is the most expensive path by a wide margin and you lose your original part.
- Do it yourself. A standard code reader cannot clear crash data, and the specialty equipment and know-how to do it correctly are not something most people have at home. We cover why in our guide on whether an OBD2 scanner can clear the airbag light.
- Mail-in reset. You remove your module, ship it to a shop that clears the data in our shop, and reinstall it. You keep your original OEM part and save up to 80 percent against the dealer. This is what we do.

The mail-in process, step by step
Confirm the car is properly repaired
This comes first, every time. The reset is the last step after the vehicle has been correctly repaired and is mechanically safe. Do not reset a light to mask damage that was not fixed.
Locate and remove the module
Disconnect the battery and let the system fully power down before you touch the module. The airbag control module is usually mounted low in the center console or under a front seat. Our vehicles page notes what your manufacturer calls it and roughly where it lives. If you are not comfortable doing this, any shop can pull it in a few minutes.
Start an order and ship it to us
Pick the airbag module reset service, print the packing slip, pack the module so it cannot rattle, and mail it. We will tell you exactly what to include in plain English.
We clear the data in our shop
We read the module, clear the stored crash data and hard codes at the module level, then test it to confirm it reads factory-ready before it leaves the shop. This is restoration work with the right equipment, not a quick scan.
Reinstall and confirm the light is off
Your original module comes back ready to plug in. Reconnect the battery and the SRS light should go out, as long as any deployed seat belts have also been rebuilt.
Do not forget the seat belts
If your airbags fired, your seat belt pretensioners almost certainly fired too. A spent pretensioner keeps its own code in the module, so even a perfectly reset module can leave the light on if the belts were not addressed. Deployed pretensioners cannot be reset with software. They must be physically rebuilt.
