U1000 is Nissan's CAN communication failure code. Read out of the restraint system, it means the air bag diagnosis sensor unit went two seconds or longer without sending or receiving CAN messages. The number is manufacturer specific and every Nissan module that talks on the bus can store it, so which module reported it matters as much as the code itself.
The air bag diagnosis sensor unit sits under the center console and does more than watch firing loops. It is a node on the vehicle's CAN bus and trades messages with the combination meter and the body control module. Nissan's service data titles the code CAN COMMUNICATION FAILURE and states the detection logic in one line: the DTC sets when the air bag diagnosis sensor unit is not transmitting or receiving CAN communication signals for 2 or more seconds.
Because the same number is used across the vehicle, a scan of every module tells you more than a scan of the restraint system alone. When one module reports U1000 and the rest are quiet, the problem is usually local to that module: its connector, its power feed, or its ground. When most modules report it together, the bus itself is down.
Nissan's own procedure reflects that. The SRS chart for U1000 does not send a technician to a restraint component. It sends them to the LAN section trouble diagnosis flow chart to find the root cause of the communication failure first.
Neither. U1000 is a report about the network, so it carries no deployment record and names no single part. It does have one common overlap. After a collision a harness can be damaged in the same event that fired the airbags, so U1000 can sit in the list beside Nissan's collision detection codes B1209 and B1210. Those two hold the deployment record and are handled separately from the wiring repair.
Not on its own. Restoring a module's memory does nothing for an open CAN wire, a corroded ground, or a battery that drops below the unit's operating range at crank, and the code returns as soon as the condition repeats. Repair the network fault, clear codes, then cycle the key.
If the vehicle also stored B1209 or B1210, the diagnosis sensor unit is locked with crash data and that part does not clear with a scan tool. Send it in for an airbag module reset once the wiring is repaired. If testing shows the unit itself has failed, we can look for a replacement airbag control module for your year and model.
U1000 in this form belongs to Nissan and Infiniti vehicles built around the air bag diagnosis sensor unit, and it shows up on Altima, Sentra, Versa, Rogue, Frontier, Titan, and Murano. U1xxx numbers are manufacturer specific rather than a shared standard, so other brands assign U1000 to their own networks with their own detection windows. Confirm the code came from a Nissan family module before following anything here.
Start with power and ground. Load test the battery, check charging output, and clean the main chassis grounds and both battery terminals. A large share of U1000 reports trace back to a vehicle that was jump started or had the battery disconnected for other work. Then scan every module and write down which ones report U1000 and which do not. That list narrows the search to one branch of the harness instead of the whole bus.
Inspect the connector at the air bag diagnosis sensor unit under the console with the battery disconnected and the system given at least three minutes to bleed down. If the vehicle has been in a collision, check for stored crash data at the same time, since a module reset and any seat belt repair can be handled together. A reset clears stored crash data. A replacement part fixes a hardware fault. We have read these codes since the nineties and will tell you which one you are looking at.
