What B2205 means

Modules on these vehicles store the VIN and compare it against what the network tells them. A controller that finds a blank VIN field or a VIN that belongs to another vehicle sets B2205. It is a security and configuration check, and it is designed to catch a module that has been moved between vehicles.

Nothing about this code points at a sensor, a connector, or an airbag. The hardware can all be healthy while the identification data behind it is missing or wrong. Correcting it means programming the right VIN into the controller with a tool that supports the procedure, and time spent testing circuits will not move the code.

• A used or salvage controller installed from a different vehicle
• A new module fitted and never programmed with the VIN
• Programming interrupted before the VIN was written
• A cluster or other module replaced, leaving two modules reporting different VINs
• A previous repair where the VIN was written incorrectly

Crash data or hardware fault?

B2205 falls under hardware because it reports the module's stored data state. Crash data is an entirely separate thing, written into airbag module memory at the moment of deployment and impossible to erase with a scan tool. A VIN mismatch is corrected through programming on the vehicle.
