B2205-00: ORC VIN Missing Or Mismatch

What B2205-00 means

The restraint controller stores the vehicle identification number of the truck it was programmed for. On startup it compares that stored VIN against the one broadcast by the rest of the vehicle. A mismatch, or a blank field where the VIN should be, tells the module it is in the wrong vehicle, and it records B2205-00.

That check exists to stop restraint modules from being moved around without anyone knowing. It also means a perfectly healthy module from a donor truck will set this code the first time it powers up in your vehicle. The hardware may be fine, and the identity written inside it is what the system is objecting to.

Common causes

• A used ORC installed from another vehicle without being programmed to this VIN
• A replacement module supplied blank and never given the vehicle identification number
• A programming attempt that failed or was interrupted before the VIN was written
• A body control or cluster module replaced so the VIN the ORC hears has changed
• A module that was reset or reflashed by a service that cleared the stored VIN

Crash data or hardware fault?

B2205-00 is a live hardware and identity fault, not a deployment record. The module rechecks the VIN on every startup and rewrites the code until the stored value matches. Deployment records are the other thing an ORC holds. They are permanent once written, invisible to a scan tool clear, and removable only through a module reset.

Does our reset clear it?

Clearing crash data and writing a VIN are different jobs. Our mail-in reset takes stored deployment data out of a module, which matters if the donor vehicle was wrecked. It does not make the module think it belongs to your truck. Programming the VIN takes a factory level tool, and the cleanest path in most cases is a module that already matches your vehicle.

B2205-00 is listed under Ram. It comes up constantly on used restraint modules, since a controller pulled from any other truck carries that truck's VIN inside it until someone changes it.

What to do next

Find out where your module came from before troubleshooting anything else, because a donor ORC explains this code by itself.
