What B1019 means

The sensing and diagnostic module carries a configuration that lists exactly which restraint devices belong on that vehicle. Two front airbags, a certain number of side curtains, pretensioners, sensors, and so on. At startup it takes inventory. When the count it finds does not match the count it expects, it writes B1019 and stops trusting the system.

The mismatch can run either direction. A device that is missing shows up as a shortage, and a device the calibration never accounted for shows up as an extra. Either way the module refuses to arm, because firing the wrong set of devices in a crash is worse than firing none.

Common causes

• A used or donor module installed from a vehicle with a different restraint package
• A curtain, side airbag, or pretensioner removed and never reinstalled
• A seat swapped in from a trim level with a different number of restraint devices
• A module that was never programmed to the vehicle after replacement
• An open circuit severe enough that the module counts the device as absent

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1019 sits under hardware because it describes the module's own configuration state rather than a live resistance reading or a crash record. Crash data is permanent once written and a scan tool cannot touch it. A configuration error is a mismatch between programming and parts, so it goes away when the two are brought back in line.

Does our reset clear it?

A mail-in reset clears stored fault memory in the module, and it is useful when B1019 was set by a condition that has since been corrected. It does not reprogram a module to a different vehicle configuration. If the module came out of another vehicle with a different restraint package, it needs the correct calibration for the car it is going into, and that is a programming job.

Which makes throw it

B1019 shows up across Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC on the GM side, and also on Infiniti and Nissan, where the restraint controller runs the same kind of component inventory at startup.

What to do next

Ask first whether anything on the restraint system was changed recently, because a donor module or a swapped seat explains most of these before a meter ever comes out. Compare the module part number and calibration against what the VIN calls for.
