What B1B56 means

Open means the path is broken. Instead of a low reading or a high reading, the restraint controller sees nothing coming back from the buckle switch, the way it would if the connector were simply unplugged. That is exactly what causes a large share of these, since the under seat connector is easy to knock loose.

With the circuit open, the vehicle has no way of knowing whether the passenger belt is fastened. The controller stores B1B56, lights the airbag lamp, and stops using that input for its restraint decisions until continuity comes back. Owners often notice the belt reminder behaving strangely at the same time, since the chime logic reads the same switch.

Common causes

• The passenger buckle connector unplugged after seat removal or interior work
• A broken wire in the harness under the seat, often at a flex point near the track
• A buckle switch that has failed open internally
• A terminal backed out of the connector body so it never makes contact
• Corrosion severe enough to break the circuit rather than just raise resistance

Crash data or hardware fault?

Circuit codes like B1B56 describe what the controller measures in real time, so an open that gets reconnected reads normal on the next check. Crash data is nothing like that. After a deployment the module writes a permanent record, and clearing codes on the vehicle leaves that record untouched.

Does our reset clear it?

A reset does not close an open circuit. Until the broken wire, loose connector, or failed switch is repaired, the controller sets B1B56 again on the next key cycle.
