B1B00: Driver Airbag Squib 1, Low

Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep set B1B00 when the driver airbag squib 1 circuit reads low. The resistance in that firing loop has dropped under the window the restraint controller allows.

Circuit fault

What B1B00 means

Squib 1 is the first inflator initiator in the driver airbag. The occupant restraint controller pushes a tiny test current through that loop and measures what comes back, and it expects a resistance in a narrow band. A low reading tells it the circuit has found a shorter path than it should have, so it stores B1B00 and disarms the system.

The loop starts at the controller, runs up the steering column through the clockspring, and ends at the inflator in the wheel. On a column with a clockspring, that rotating connection is the part doing the hardest work, and it is where a low reading most often starts.

Common causes

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is a live circuit reading, not a stored crash record. B1B00 comes and goes with the actual resistance in the loop, so it can set, clear, and set again as a connector moves. Crash data is the opposite kind of entry. Once the airbags fire, that record is written into the module permanently and no scan tool removes it.

Does our reset clear it?

Resetting the module does not repair a low reading on the driver squib circuit. The controller measures that loop again within seconds of the next key cycle and writes B1B00 right back. Fix the clockspring, connector, or inflator first. If the vehicle also deployed at some point and the module is holding crash data behind this code, that part is what our mail-in reset handles.

Which makes throw it

B1B00 is a Chrysler family code, used the same way on Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles that share the occupant restraint controller.

What to do next

Disconnect the battery, wait for the system to bleed down, then pull the driver airbag and look at the connector and the clockspring pigtail before anything else. A clockspring that has been overturned during a steering rack or column job is the usual find. Measure the loop at the module connector to separate a harness fault from a bad inflator, and we can supply a genuine OEM driver airbag if the inflator is the failed part. Related codes: B2212, B1B01, B1379.

B1B00 points at a circuit, not the module

Fix the circuit, then clear the code.

Trace the wiring and connectors first. If the module still holds the fault after the repair, mail it to us and we will clear it.
