What B1658 means

Kia restraint systems keep a running count of how many times the belt pretensioners have fired. Once that count reaches six, the module stops the system and stores B1658. It is a life limit written into the software, which is why nothing on the vehicle will test bad while the code is present.

Reaching the limit says the restraint hardware has been through more events than the design allows for reuse. The count lives in module memory, so it follows the module rather than the vehicle. A used module pulled from a car with a long event history can bring a full or nearly full counter with it into a vehicle that is otherwise clean.

Common causes

• Six recorded pretensioner firings over the life of the module
• A used module installed with a high count already stored
• Repeated events that cycled the pretensioners
• Pretensioners reused after firing instead of being replaced
• A module carried over during a previous repair without being reset

Crash data or hardware fault?

Kia files this with crash data because it is a stored record rather than a measurement. Circuit codes describe what the module is reading at this second and clear when the reading is good. A deployment count does not clear on its own, no matter how healthy every circuit in the car is.

Does our reset clear it?
