B0088 names the right rear side impact sensor on GM vehicles. It sits in the back half of the body on the passenger side, watching for a side collision that the front sensors would not catch in time.
Side impacts happen fast and there is very little structure between the occupant and the striking object, so GM places satellite sensors along both sides of the car. The right rear unit covers the passenger side rear quarter. It reports to the sensing and diagnostic module, and when it fails its self checks or returns implausible data, B0088 goes into memory.
A hardware classification tells you the module suspects the part itself. With side sensors the mounting matters as much as the electronics, because the sensor has to feel body deformation directly through its bolted joint. A sensor that is loose, shimmed by trim, or sitting on damaged sheet metal reports forces that do not match reality, and the module treats that as unreliable.
This code is in the hardware group, which means the module has judged the component rather than the path to it. Crash data is the other kind of entry and works nothing like this. It is created when the restraint system fires, it is a permanent record of the event, and no scan tool can delete it from the module.
A live B0088 needs the sensor addressed, because clearing the module leaves the same part reporting the same fault at the next start. Side impact sensors are frequently replaced after a side collision, and a car in that condition usually has crash data locked in the module too. Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC all report B0088. The four brands share GM restraint diagnostics, so the code definition and the diagnostic approach are the same across them.
Pull the rear interior trim on the right side and put a wrench on the sensor bolt before you do anything else, since a loose sensor is common after body or trim work and costs nothing to check. Inspect the connector for water staining and corrosion.
