B0029-11: Right Curtain Shorted to Ground

What B0029-11 means

The right curtain airbag deploys from the roof rail to cover the side windows in a rollover or side impact. Its firing circuit runs from the control module up a pillar and along the rail to the inflator. When one of those conductors finds chassis ground, the module reads resistance well below the acceptable window and stores this code.

Roof rail wiring shorts to ground in a small number of predictable places. Trim clips punch through insulation, sheet metal edges at the pillar cut into a harness that was routed carelessly, and water tracking down from a sunroof drain or a roof seam bridges a damaged spot to the body. The search is for contact, not for a break.

Common causes

• Insulation cut by a trim clip or a sheet metal edge along the right roof rail
• A harness pinched behind pillar trim during reassembly
• Water from a sunroof drain, roof seam, or antenna base bridging damaged insulation to ground
• An internal short in the curtain inflator igniter
• Aftermarket accessory wiring run along the rail that abraded the SRS harness
• Corrosion at the inflator connector grounding a terminal to the shell

Crash data or hardware fault?

Measured live, this reading places the code with the circuit family. The module re evaluates the reading constantly and the code clears when the short is gone. Stored crash data behaves in the opposite way, written once at deployment and held permanently until a module reset removes it.

Does our reset clear it?

A short to ground has to be repaired on the truck. No reset changes the resistance the module measures, and the code returns immediately after any clear. What to do next

Disconnect the curtain inflator and measure the harness alone to ground, because that single test tells you whether the short is in the wiring or inside the airbag. If the harness is grounded, drop the right side pillar trim and follow the rail looking for clip punctures and rub marks. Check for water staining at the headliner.
