A restraint controller only gets to make its deployment decision once, and it keeps a permanent note that it did. 9C8A is that note. The module logged a crash input, and from that point forward it treats itself as used. Any technician who scans the car afterward sees this code no matter how good the rest of the system reads.

Customers are often surprised that new airbags and new belts do not turn the light off. The reason is that the module is not complaining about parts at all. It is holding a record of an event, and until that record is removed the module will not arm the system or let the warning lamp go out.

• A collision the module judged severe enough to record as a crash input
• Airbags, curtains, or belt pretensioners that deployed in that event
• A used or salvage module that already had a crash input when it was installed
• A crash recorded even where only some devices fired
• A module reinstalled after an accident without being cleared

Crash data or hardware fault?

9C8A is stored crash data, not a live circuit reading. It was written into protected memory during the event and it stays there, which is exactly the behavior the design intends. Circuit codes are the other kind. They come from measurements the module takes over and over, and they clear on their own once the readings are back where they belong.

Does our reset clear it?

Our mail-in module reset is the service that clears this. Replace everything that deployed with genuine OEM parts, repair any wiring damage from the collision, and then send us the module.
