What 31-8X means

The driver side airbag lives in the seat back and fires on a loop the SRS unit monitors at all times. When the module sees battery voltage on that pair, it stores 31-8X, because a firing circuit tied to a powered wire is no longer something the module alone decides to trigger. Deployment is disabled and the light stays on.

Under a modern front seat there is a lot of power. Seat motors, heaters, occupant sensing, and sometimes memory modules all share the space with the SRS harness. A rubbed-through wire from any of those circuits will hand voltage to the airbag pair, and the airbag itself is usually in perfect condition when that happens.

Common causes

• Power seat or seat heater wiring chafed into the SRS pair under the cushion
• An aftermarket seat heater kit spliced into the same loom as the side airbag circuit
• A liquid spill in the under-seat connector bridging a powered terminal to the firing pair
• The seat harness crushed by the seat track at full travel and shorting to a hot wire
• A backed-out terminal at the SRS unit connector touching an adjacent powered pin

Crash data or hardware fault?

Everything 31-8X reports is happening right now on the circuit, which makes it a live fault rather than a stored record. Remove the voltage source and the loop reads normally again. Stored crash data is the opposite case, written at deployment and untouched by any wiring repair you do afterward.

Does our reset clear it?

Do not expect a reset to help here. The SRS unit tests the loop again at the next key-on, finds battery voltage still on it, and sets 31-8X back. Trace the power source and repair the contact point. A mail-in module reset is the correct service when the module is locked on crash data, which is a different fault entirely.

What to do next

Disconnect the battery and give the SRS capacitor time to bleed down before you touch the seat harness. Then unplug the side airbag, reconnect power, and check the harness side of the loop for voltage with the key on.
