What 01222 means

G180 watches for a side impact on the passenger side and reports to the airbag controller. Side impacts leave very little time to make a deployment decision, so the controller depends on this sensor completely and refuses to arm the side bags when the sensor is not behaving. That refusal is what puts 01222 in memory and the light on the dash.

The sensor is mounted in the door or pillar structure, low enough to feel an impact quickly. Water is the usual enemy there. Door drains plug with dirt, vapor barriers get torn during speaker or window regulator work, and the harness that reaches the sensor has to flex through the jamb every time the door opens.

• A plugged door drain leaving water standing where the sensor mounts
• A vapor barrier torn during speaker, lock, or window regulator work
• Corrosion in the sensor connector inside the door
• A broken conductor in the door jamb harness boot
• Sensor or bracket damage from a previous side impact repair

Crash data or hardware fault?

This code reflects the sensor's live condition, not a record of a past crash. Once the sensor reports normally the fault goes away by itself. Stored crash data is the permanent kind, written at deployment and cleared only by resetting the controller off the vehicle.

Does our reset clear it?

A reset will not dry out a door or repair a broken wire, and the controller reports 01222 again on its next check. Handle the water, the harness, or the sensor first. What to do next

Pull the door panel and check the drains before you order a sensor, since standing water in the door is both the likely cause and something that will ruin a new sensor too. Inspect the jamb harness by flexing it with the door open.
