What 00654 means

The driver belt tensioner pulls slack out of the belt at the start of a crash, before the airbag does its work. Its igniter, N153, sits on a monitored loop and the controller checks the resistance at every self test. A reading outside the accepted window stores 00654 and takes the system offline.

The loop runs from the controller under the console, along the floor, and up to the retractor at the B-pillar. Audi and Volkswagen route part of this through connectors near the seat and the sill, and those are the spots where water, foot traffic, and seat movement do their damage. The wire itself is rarely the problem.

Common causes

• A corroded connector near the driver seat or at the base of the B-pillar
• Water under the carpet reaching the floor harness connectors
• A connector left unlatched after seat, sill trim, or carpet work
• A conductor crushed by a seat rail or a seat mounting bolt
• An igniter that has failed inside the driver retractor assembly

Crash data or hardware fault?

00654 is a live resistance fault. The controller measures the loop continuously, so the code is present only while the circuit is out of range. Crash data is the permanent entry written after an actual deployment, and it does not respond to repairs the way a circuit reading does.

Does our reset clear it?

Do not reset and hope. The controller checks the tensioner loop again within seconds of key-on and stores 00654 while the fault remains. Repair the connector or replace the retractor first. Our mail-in reset applies when the tensioner has actually fired and the controller is locked on a crash record, and it is done after the belt hardware is replaced.

N153 carries the same designation on Audi and on Volkswagen. The component designation and the meaning carry across both brands without change.

What to do next

Pull the sill trim and unplug the connectors along the driver floor first, because corrosion at those connectors accounts for a large share of these and costs nothing to check. Measure the igniter loop at the retractor to separate the belt assembly from the harness.
