00588: Driver Airbag Igniter N95

What 00588 means

N95 is the igniter inside the driver airbag, and the controller keeps a constant watch on the loop that feeds it. Resistance is compared against a fixed window and anything outside it, in either direction, stores 00588. The driver airbag is taken out of service at that point and the warning light stays on until the reading comes back into range.

The path from the controller to N95 goes through the dash harness, up the column, and across the spiral spring behind the steering wheel. The spiral spring is the moving link in that chain, since it has to maintain the connection through full steering travel. It is the part that most often produces this reading on a car with no history of collision work.

Common causes

• A spiral spring with a worn or broken internal ribbon after years of steering
• The airbag connector under the wheel not fully latched after column or wheel work
• A spiral spring installed out of center, straining the ribbon at the end of travel
• Corrosion or a spread terminal at the controller connector
• An igniter that has failed open or shorted inside the driver airbag

Crash data or hardware fault?

00588 tracks a live resistance measurement rather than a crash record. The controller retests the loop at every key-on, so the code stops being current as soon as the circuit reads normally. Crash data is written once during a deployment and stays locked in the controller, which is why it needs a bench reset instead of a repair.

Does our reset clear it?

Do not count on a reset for 00588. The controller measures the loop again within seconds and stores the same code while the fault is physically present. Replace or repair the spiral spring, connector, or airbag first. Our mail-in reset comes into play when the controller is also locked on deployment data from an actual crash.

Which makes throw it

Audi and Volkswagen both use 00588 for N95, and the component number is the same on either badge. That makes the wiring diagram approach identical whichever one is on the lift.

What to do next

Center the wheel, disconnect the battery, and let the system bleed down before you pull the driver airbag. With the bag out, measure the loop at the spiral spring connector to decide whether the fault is in the airbag or upstream. A spiral spring that reads open or intermittent while you rotate it is the part to replace, and an airbag that reads out of range needs a genuine OEM driver airbag, which we stock for Audi and VW.
