What B1BA8 means

Weight based occupant detection depends on a baseline. The module learns what an empty seat reads and measures everything else against that figure. Change the seat's physical makeup, or install a module that never learned the baseline, and the numbers stop lining up. B1BA8 is how the module says its reference is no longer valid.

An out of calibration module can still be a healthy module. The sensors may all be reading, the wiring may be sound, and the seat may work mechanically, while the module lacks a trustworthy starting point and refuses to classify occupants without one. That is why the repair on most of these is a procedure rather than a part.

• A replacement occupant classification module installed without running calibration
• Seat cushion, cover, or trim changes that altered the empty seat weight
• Calibration attempted with something resting on the seat, storing a wrong baseline

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1BA8 is grouped with hardware because it reports the module's internal calibration state. Crash data is a separate category that gets written permanently when airbags deploy and cannot be erased with a scan tool. Calibration, by contrast, is something a shop can redo whenever the seat conditions are correct.

Mailing the airbag module in for a reset does not calibrate an occupant classification module. Calibration happens on the vehicle with the seat empty and the procedure run through a capable scan tool.
