What B1B1A means

Curtain airbags on these vehicles are fired by one or more squibs, and the controller monitors each one separately. Squib 1 on the left curtain has its own wires running from the controller up a left side pillar to the curtain module behind the headliner. An open reading means that path is broken, so the curtain cannot be deployed on command.

The controller cannot narrow the location for you. Anything in the path produces the same open: the controller pin, the body harness, the pillar connector, or the squib itself. What it does tell you is that this is a hard break rather than a marginal reading, which usually makes the fault easier to find than a high resistance complaint.

Common causes

• Left curtain connector disconnected or partly seated after headliner or pillar trim work
• A broken wire in the left pillar harness, often from trim clips or a prior repair
• An open squib inside the left curtain module
• Corroded terminals from water tracking down the left pillar
• Controller connector damage from a previous module swap

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1B1A reflects a reading the controller takes right now, which makes it a circuit fault rather than crash history. Repair the break and it stops setting. Stored crash data works the other way: once a deployment is written in, it stays until the controller is reset, and no scan tool will remove it.

Does our reset clear it?

Sending the controller in for a reset does not fix an open curtain circuit. The break is in the vehicle, not in the module memory, so the code returns as soon as the controller powers up and tests the loop. Repair the wiring or replace the curtain, then use the reset service if the Jeep also carries deployment data.

This code comes up on Jeep. The B1B numbering covers squib circuits on that family of occupant restraint controllers, and the left curtain circuits share their routing with the rest of the left side restraint wiring.

What to do next

Pop the left pillar trim and check the curtain connector before reaching for a meter, because a connector that was never relatched is the most common answer here. If it is seated, measure the squib loop at that connector to decide which side of it is open. A curtain module that reads open internally needs to be replaced with a genuine OEM unit.
