What B1866 means

Lexus fits a knee airbag under the passenger side lower dash on a number of models. The airbag control module sends a test current through that squib circuit and expects a specific resistance back. B1866 is the entry the module makes when the current has nowhere to go, meaning the path is broken somewhere between the module pin and the inflator winding.

Everything in that path counts equally as far as the module is concerned. The pin at the module, the length of harness running across the lower dash, the connector at the bag, and the squib inside the bag itself all sit in series. One bad joint anywhere gives you the same code, so the diagnosis is about narrowing the path rather than guessing at a part.

Common causes

• The knee airbag connector disturbed during glovebox removal and not fully reseated
• Harness chafe where the SRS wiring crosses a bracket edge under the passenger dash
• An open squib inside the knee airbag inflator
• Aftermarket stereo or alarm work that cut or spliced into the wrong harness
• Moisture at the passenger kick panel corroding the connector terminals
• A module connector that was not locked down with its lever fully seated

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1866 is a live circuit reading. The module tests it continuously, so the code mirrors the real state of the loop and disappears once continuity is restored. Stored crash data behaves nothing like that. It is written a single time when a bag fires and it stays in the module until a reset service removes it.

Does our reset clear it?

This code is not a reset candidate on its own. Sending in a module while the passenger knee squib circuit is open just returns a cleared module that stores the same code again. Repair the wiring or replace the airbag, whichever the testing points to. Our reset service belongs at the end of the job, and only if the module is also holding crash data.
