What B1762 means

An airbag control unit carries configuration data describing the restraint package in the car it belongs to: how many airbags, how they are staged, which sensors exist, and how the system should behave. When the unit reads that data and finds it wrong, incomplete, or written for a different vehicle, it stores B1762 and refuses to arm the system.

Replacement modules are the common path to this code. A unit pulled from a donor car brings the donor's configuration with it, and a coding session that lost power or was cancelled partway leaves the memory in a state the module will not accept. Neither situation involves a broken circuit anywhere in the vehicle.

• A used control unit installed with configuration data from a different vehicle
• A coding or programming session interrupted before it completed
• Low battery voltage during coding leaving the write unfinished
• A replacement module never coded to the vehicle at all
• Corrupted configuration memory following a voltage event or a failed write

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1762 describes the module's own data rather than a loop out in the harness, which is why testing wires gets you nowhere with it. Crash data lives in the same unit as a separate permanent record written after a deployment, and no scan tool removes that record. A salvage module frequently carries both.

Hyundai and Kia both report B1762, which is expected given the restraint hardware the two makes share. The code reads the same on either one, and so does the path to clearing it.

What to do next

Establish where the module came from before anything else, because a unit swapped in from another vehicle is the usual reason this code exists. Check battery voltage and charging system health next, since a weak supply will sink the next coding attempt the same way it sank the last one.
