What B1651 means

Once the SRSCM commands a deployment, it writes what happened into permanent memory. B1651 is that entry for a frontal event involving the driver airbag. The module then locks itself so it will not arm a new set of restraints, which keeps a repaired vehicle from going back on the road with a control unit that has already spent its deployment.

Everything else on the car can be finished and the light still stays on. New airbags, new belts, and a clean wiring harness do not clear a crash record. The module holds it regardless, and a scan tool that can read the code has no ability to erase it. Kia built it that way on purpose.

• Seat belt pretensioners that fired in the same event
• A clockspring damaged by the deployment

Crash data is its own category and behaves nothing like the circuit codes that surround it. Circuit codes track live resistance and clear themselves after a repair. B1651 was written once, at the moment of the collision, and stays in the module memory until the module itself is reset.
