What B1061 means

Side impact sensors on these vehicles are not simple switches. They report digitally to the restraint control unit over a dedicated line, and the unit expects a steady stream of valid messages. B1061 means those messages stopped arriving or arrived corrupted, and the definition covers both a communication problem and a plain cable fault on that circuit.

The sensor typically mounts low in the driver side body structure, near the B pillar or inside the door sill area. Its wiring runs through territory that sees water, road salt, and trim removal. A cut, a corroded terminal, or a sensor that lost power all produce the same silence from the module point of view.

Common causes

• A cut or chafed conductor in the sensor circuit along the driver sill
• Corroded terminals at the sensor connector from water in the rocker or floor area
• The sensor connector left unlatched after sill trim or carpet work
• Loss of supply or ground to the sensor
• A sensor that has failed and stopped transmitting
• Collision repair on the driver side that damaged or disconnected the sensor lead

Crash data or hardware fault?

The module watches this line continuously, so B1061 is a live fault and it belongs with the circuit codes. It disappears when the sensor starts communicating again. Crash data does not follow the wiring at all: it is written once at deployment and held permanently, and clearing it takes a module reset rather than a repair.

There is no reset path to a talking sensor. Restore the circuit, replace the sensor if it is dead, and the communication fault resolves itself. B1061 is Mercedes-Benz specific, and A53/1 is their designation for the driver side airbag and window airbag sensor. Use that designator in their wiring documentation to find the exact mounting location for the model in front of you.

What to do next

Check power and ground at the sensor connector before assuming the sensor is bad, because a sensor with no supply behaves exactly like a dead one. Then inspect the harness along the sill for cuts, corrosion, and pinch points from trim clips. Look closely if this side of the car has had bodywork.
