56-25: Lost Communication With Gauge Module

What 56-25 means

The SRS unit and the gauge control module trade messages so the dash can show the airbag warning lamp and so the SRS unit knows the cluster is alive. When those messages stop arriving, the SRS unit stores 56-25. The fault is about the conversation between the two modules, not about any airbag loop or inflator.

A code like this usually comes with company. If the gauge control module is offline, other modules on the same network will complain about it too, and the customer often reports a cluster that goes dark or behaves oddly. Reading codes from the rest of the vehicle before condemning anything gives you a much better picture than reading the SRS unit alone.

Common causes

• A gauge control module that has lost power, ground, or failed outright
• Damaged or corroded network wiring between the cluster and the rest of the vehicle
• A connector behind the instrument cluster left loose after dash or radio work
• A blown fuse feeding the gauge control module
• Another module dragging the network down and taking communication with it

Crash data or hardware fault?

The SRS unit is reporting something it is watching live, so this code reflects the current state of the network rather than a past event. Stored crash data is the permanent category: written once during a deployment and impossible to erase with a scan tool. Restore communication and 56-25 stops setting.

Module reset service does nothing for a communication fault. Our service clears locked crash data and restores the SRS unit, which is the fix after a deployment and not the fix for a cluster that has gone quiet. Get the gauge module talking again first. If the vehicle also deployed and the SRS unit is holding crash data, mail it in once the network issue is solved.
